I knew what I was getting in to, and I really liked India and wanted to move here. So don't think everything is bad. The climate is great, the plants are beautiful, the food is out of this world, and the people are very nice. But I've had so many OMG moments the past few days I just have to share them:
The café at my hotel has a dinner buffet. Last night I saw an older man pick up a little cake with his fingers, look at it, and put it back on the buffet table. OMG!
This morning the waiter saw my yogurt and cereal, asked, "is that milk?", and grabbed my spoon and started poking my food. OMG!
There is construction along my walk between the two buildings where I'm working. The construction workers are bare footed, wearing no shirts, carrying bowls of cement on their heads, digging with shovels, and have open holes all over the place. OMG!
Also on the path between the two buildings there is an empty lot filled with garbage 5 feet high. OMG!
When I finished my lunch today and put my tray in the tray washing area there was a big, tortilla-sized piece of crispy bread I hadn't eaten. I watched someone grab it with has bare hands and start eating it. OMG!
Wait, there's more…
It rained last night. There is a big puddle on the driveway at work. A woman was using a dustpan to scoop the water into a bucket. OMG!
There was a fire drill at work last week. The security guards on my floor made visitors sign out. OMG!
At the food court today there were two men behind the counter when a guy ordered. The first guy took the order and the money and gave the customer his receipt. The customer promptly handed the receipt to the guy who was standing so close he was touching the guy who took the order so that guy could fill the order. I literally laughed out loud but then felt bad because they were serious and didn't know why I was laughing. OMG!
I had to go in to register for residency today. The Ford guy gave me a stack of papers and sent me in without him. I was directed to one room where I waited in line at table 5. Table 5 guy looked at my papers, made check marks on some of them, wrote my name a piece of paper, handed the stack to me, and told me to go to the help desk. That was out the hall, into another room. Waited for a sec, handed the stack to a man, who got a chip with the number 92 on it from another woman, handed me the chip, and told me to go back to the first room to Table 4. The Table 4 woman took my stack of papers and the chip, told me I didn't get the application form, and sent me back to the help desk room. Back with my stack of papers, told the guy I needed an application, he told the woman, the woman gave it to him, he gave it to me. Back to the original room. I filled out the application (which I copied from papers in the stack), went back to Table 4 woman, gave her the stack with the cover page from Table 5 guy and the application from the help desk couple, she filled out a slip of paper with my name and told me to come back on July 5 to get my residency card.
I am not making any of this up. Why couldn't I have done this online? Why couldn't Table 5 guy have given me the app and taken it back from me? Why did I have to go between rooms? Why….?
I don't want to hear anyone ever complain about going to get a driver's license ever again.
OMG!!!!!
(BTW, Mr. R., get ready. You'll have to do the same routine. And S told me a story about a guy who started yelling when he waited in line forever and they intentionally drew his process out over days until he was contrite.)
